Metro Atlanta DUI Task Forces
DUI Task Forces
DUI task forces or special driving under the influence trained officers are police officers that have specialized training in DUI detection and deterrence. Every officer who goes through a police academy or the Georgia State Patrol training academy has some training in DUI investigation. But that training is just part of general officer training. It does not go into detail into all of the aspects of a Georgia DUI investigation. DUI task force officers have extensive training by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This training involves observing vehicles in motion, the initial DUI investigation after deciding to initiate a traffic stop, field sobriety evaluations, breath testing training and certification, and additional training on how to testify in court and case law updates in order to be on top of the latest advancements in the law.
The city of Atlanta has specialized DUI officers as part of the Atlanta Police Department as well as the Georgia State Patrol Nighthawks Division. The Nighthawks are special DUI enforcement officers who patrol the roads of Metro Atlanta including Cobb, DeKalb, Clayton, Douglas, and Gwinnett Counties. They are extremely well trained in DUI law, and are certified to operate breath testing machines. As part of the Nighthawks division, their number one responsibility while on patrol is to remove impaired drivers from the road.
Other municipalities, such as Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Smyrna, Marietta, Alpharetta, Roswell, Doraville, and Brookhaven have their own specially trained DUI officers. They will often be called to the scene of a traffic stop if the stopping officer believes you are impaired by drugs or alcohol. Having multiple officers at the scene of a DUI investigation can present unique legal issues that may help you win your DUI case. There may be multiple videos, hearsay issues, and other factors that could be a big benefit in beating your Atlanta DUI case, even if the officer that arrested you was well trained.
