Remember: The Flex Travel Shoulder Lanes on Georgia 400 have a 45mph Speed Limit

One of the most frequent things I see as a driver on Georgia roads occurs on Georgia 400 with people exceeding the 45 mile per hour speed limit in the flex shoulder lanes. I mostly see it as I’m driving North from Buckhead up into Roswell. Once you get past the perimeter, the flex-shoulder lanes appear. They are open from 6-10am and 4-7pm Monday through Friday, and they have a clearly marked speed limit of 45 miles per hour while traveling in them. But what I often see once I pass exit 5 in Sandy Springs heading towards exit 6, Northridge Road is people get into the flex lanes and start going 65-70mph. And this becomes a problem for them if Sandy Springs Police, Roswell Police, or Alpharetta Police are monitoring Georgia 400. A speeding ticket for 19-23mph over the speed limit is a 3 point violation in Georgia. A speeding ticket for 24-33mph over the speed limit is 4 a 4 point violation. The officer may also charge you with reckless driving based on the speed and the number of other drivers on the road.

Violations of the flex shoulder lanes are a very common citation in the Sandy Springs, Roswell, and Alpharetta Municipal Courts. Remember, the lanes have limited hours, and the speed limit in those lanes is 45mph. If you’ve been cited with a flex lane violation outside the perimeter and you have questions, call me at 678-753-6431.
